Overview

The John Warner School believe Careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) is an essential part of our curriculum.  We are committed to embedding careers education throughout the curriculum, so students are aware of the diverse opportunities open to them, and the impact their education can have on their future career options.

We aspire to develop our pupils’ understanding of the differences between school and work, by offering them a wide range of activities throughout their time with us, so they can discover where their passions lie. Throughout the year we arrange an array of events which give our pupils exposure to careers related learning.  Some of our most popular recent activities have included, visits to GSK to learn about their Higher Apprenticeship scheme, a visit to Volker Vessels and MoneySense days for our younger pupils.

We ensure all our pupils and their parents are made aware of their options as they progress through the school and are assisted in finding the most appropriate Post-16 and Post-18 options for them.  Each week both our Services for Young People personal advisers are on hand to offer impartial careers advice and guidance to our students, who require support as they approach their transition from compulsory education.

Our goal at the John Warner School is to enthuse and inspire our pupils, to participate in many of the opportunities available to them and motivate them to achieve their career dreams.  We hope that on completion of their education with us, our pupils are equipped with a lifelong passion for learning, have discovered and developed their potential, allowing them to flourish in an ever-changing world.

How we measure the impact of our provision

We are proud of ensuring that we have no students which are classified as NEETs (Not in Education, Employment or Training).  We feel this is a strong indicator that we support our students well at those key decision points at the end of year 11 and year 13, with our experienced careers advisers a major contributor to this.

For us to continue improving our careers provision we must strive for continuous improvement in what we deliver to our students by being reflective in our teaching of careers.  Moving forward we will look to gain greater student insight by using online surveys for feedback on events to ensure we continue improving our careers provision and review our published information annually.

Careers Programme at The John Warner School

The Career Development Institute (CDI) created a framework which presents end of key stage learning outcome statements for learners across 17 important areas of careers, employability and enterprise education, grouped under the following three headings.

·   Developing yourself through careers, employability and enterprise education

·   Learning about careers and the world of work

·   Developing your career management, employability and enterprise skills

At John Warner, what we deliver to our students is centred around this framework. Throughout their time with us, all students will experience the following:

·   Careers learning through timetabled PSHRE lessons (Year 7 – Year 13) and form time activities (all year groups)

·   Careers Week assemblies and lessons, additional Careers Events

·   Use of Unifrog which is the leading career development service

·   Pathway meetings at the key check points in KS3 (prior to GCSE option choices) and KS4 (prior to sixth form or college applications)

·   Impartial, independent 1-1 guidance via appointments with our Services for Young People personal advisers.

KS3 Checkpoint: By the end of Year 9 you will have:

·   Had opportunities to reflect on your personal qualities and the way you relate to your peers

·   Begun to identify your strengths and how you can make the best use of them

·   Started finding out about different career areas and qualification routes that might interest you in the future

·   Developed an understanding of Enterprise through sessions delivered in Lifelong Learning

·   Learnt about a number of career sectors through talks, videos, Careers Fairs etc

·   Explored your GCSE choices with the support of the school

·   Had the opportunity to attend an Apprenticeship Event

·   Had optional access to impartial information, advice and guidance from the school’s Careers and Enterprise Manager and our visiting Connexions Advisers.

KS4 Checkpoint: By the end of Year 11 you will have:

·   Used a variety of careers software and websites in order to help you make your decisions about Post-16 options.

·   Had the opportunity to attend careers talks/visits during the school year from visiting speakers on a variety of topics.

·   Produced a CV and covering letter that focus on your skills and qualities

·   Had the opportunity to attend an Apprenticeship Event

·   Been made aware of all the Post-16 Choices available to you, through presentations in class & assembly, Year 11 Options Evening, Pathways Interview and attending taster sessions on your potential 6th Form (or college) subject choices.

·   Had optional access to impartial information, advice and guidance from the school’s Careers and Enterprise Manager and our visiting Connexions Advisers.

KS5 Checkpoint: By the end of Year 13 you will have:

·   Had the opportunity to undertake a minimum of one week’s work experience in a company of your choice. You will be responsible for arranging the placement, with support from family, friends and the school

·   Attend Year 12 Futures Days with sessions on higher education, gap years, apprenticeship options student finance etc.

·   Had the opportunity to attend careers talks during the school year from visiting speakers on a variety of topics.

·   Used a variety of careers software and websites in order to help you make your decisions about Post-18 options.

·   Been guided through the UCAS application process and made an application through UCAS, if you intend to go to university.

·   Had the opportunity to attend the Higher Education Exhibition and individual university and college open days.

·   Had the opportunity to attend an Apprenticeship Event

·   Had the opportunity to request a mock interview for employment or university admission.

·   Had optional access to impartial information, advice and guidance from the school’s visiting Careers Adviser for support with university and college applications (both in the UK or abroad) and alternative options such as seeking employment, voluntary work, taking a gap year etc.

In association with the Baker Clause we allow colleges and training providers access to every student in Years 8 to 13 to discuss non-academic routes.
