A broad and balanced curriculum

Curriculum at Key Stage 4

The John Warner School believes in offering all students a broad curriculum that provides a choice of different learning pathways which are tailored to the needs of each individual. The aim is to provide our students with a challenging, relevant and enjoyable curriculum which will help them to fulfil their education and career aspirations.

There are two learning pathways which will cater for the different needs of our students whilst maintaining choice and flexibility within them.

Learning Pathway 1

Students who will study the full English Baccalaureate - English, mathematics, science, a humanities subject (history or geography) and a language (French, German or Italian) as well as two more subjects of their choice.

Learning Pathway 2

Students who will study the majority of the English Baccalaureate - English, mathematics, science, a humanities subject (history or geography) or a language (French, German or Italian) as well as three more subjects of their choice.

The learning pathways

The core subjects

The core subjects of English, mathematics and science are studied by all students. Additionally, all students will continue to study core PE as well as lifelong learning.

The EBacc subjects

The English Baccalaureate (EBacc) comprises of the core subjects of English, mathematics and science as well as the humanities subjects of history and geography and the modern foreign languages of French, German and Italian. It is expected that 90% of students will take the EBacc subjects.

Options subjects

The remaining subjects will be offered as options. Students will be guided along one of two learning pathways and this will inform the number of additional subjects that can be chosen.

Learning Pathway 1

This pathway is primarily for students who joined year 7 at level 4 or above in English and mathematics. Students following this pathway will typically go on to study A Level and level 3 qualifications.

Learning Pathway 2

This pathway is primarily for students who joined year 7 at level 3 or below in English and/or mathematics. Students following this pathway will typically go on to study level 3 qualifications (BTEC and A Level) in the sixth form or level 2 qualifications at college.
